How do you get trained?
There are many training providers around. Don't just go to the one offering the highest potential earnings or the biggest adverts but look carefully at their training packages. What is the total cost? What support do you get? is the a cap on the number of hours available for part 3 training? Cn you speak to people who've been through their training programme? Don't be afraid to ask these questions and get the whole story!
Is ORDIT a guarantee that I get the best training?
The simple answer is NO. ORDIT sets minimum standards for driving instructor training providers. Results vary considerably between ORDIT registered companies as well as non ORDIT companies, the same way that driving instructor's pass rates vary despite them all having the same basic qualification. At car4go I am proud to have an excellent pass rate currently at 91% for part 3.
How long does it take to qualify?
You may come across a great deal of confusing information regarding this question, mainly from driving instructor training companies trying to sign you up quickly and take your money. The DSA is responsible for organizing and carrying out ADI examinations. The application and administration process means that it is almost impossible to qualify in less than 6 months (unless you take the qualifying examinations anywhere in the country). Intensive driving instructor training or fast track driving instructor training simply provides a quick return for the driving instructor training provider at the expence of the student. Therefore we at car4go will take you through the process at your own pace. We are able to offer complete syllabuses to suit you and your circumstances, this includes weekends and evenings if necessary (contact us for details).
How much does it cost?
Many companies will ask you for payment in advance. We at car4go have a payment system of pay-as-you go, or you can pre-pay for sessions at a special rate.
What about potential earnings?
Well you need to remember that most instructors, even those working for big Driving Schools like BSM or the AA, are self-employed and have to pay a franchise fee. You then have to take into account that you will get no holiday pay, sick pay or pension scheme. You will need to make provisions for these out of your earnings. Also check on whether the potential earnings are for the number of hours worked or number of lessons. For example, you should consider that for 40 1 hour lesons, you need to add in approximately 10 minutes travelling time between lessons ie another 6½ hours and then time to eat, time for admin, book-keeping, phone calls, car maintance etc. 40 lessons can easily add up to 60 hours of actual work per week.
Where can I find impartial information to beco, ing a driving instructor?
A good place to start is with the DSA (they set the standards) and the can be found at:-
What is the work like?
As a driving instructor , you would teach people how to drive safely and develope the skills they need to pass their driving test and continue to be a safe driver. You would start by assessing the learner's driving knowledge and skills. You would then plan a series of lessons based on this assessment, to get learners to a point where they can take their driving test. As the learner becomes more conpetent, you would take them onto busier roads, dual carriageways and more complex junctions like roundabouts. As well as normal driving, you might also give lessons in night driving and, for people who have passed their test, motorway driving. Once you believe the driver has reached the right standard, you would apply for a driving test date.
